This course aims to present language in its micro and macro levels. Students will be guided through the definition of language and how to study language scientifically. The micro level will present basic introduction of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The macro level will introduce students to sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and language acquisition. Students emerge with an appreciation of the diversity of the world's languages, as well as a deeper understanding of the structure of human language, the ways it is used, and its broader social and cultural context.
