This course introduces students to the major topics of phonology and to differentiate between phonetics and phonology. It also deals with the formal description of phonemes and their allophonic variations. Students will be introduced to the phonemes, allophones, syllable structure, aspects of connected speech (i.e., elision, linking, and assimilation), stress, intonation and the Distinctive Features Theory. The differences between English and Arabic will be discussed where necessary. Audio units from Peter Roach's book (audio units 8-20) constitute the practical phase of the course.
