This course is the study of the interaction between language and society. This includes the role of language in a variety of social contexts, considering both how language works and how it can be used to signal and interpret various aspects of society. Generally, this course presents material in which the relationship between language and society, and of the various functions that language has in society, is explored. The specific points of connection between language and society are delineated and illustrated.
