The General Administration of Library Affairs at Taibah University was established alongside the university in 1424 AH, with the College of Education Library – founded in 1397 AH – serving as the foundation for the current university library system. The Administration aims to promote information literacy and enrich knowledge within the university community. It plays a pivotal role in supporting academic, research, and scholarly activities by providing a variety of knowledge resources in both traditional and electronic formats, as well as processing and organizing available information to make it accessible to university stakeholders, including faculty members, students, administrative staff, and technical staff, as well as to library visitors and researchers from inside and outside the university.
The Administration directly oversees all university libraries, including the central libraries for male and female students and the branch libraries in various colleges. Currently, Taibah University has 17 libraries. The Administration also works to document and catalogue the intellectual output of university staff to encourage scholarly production and promote its exchange with other universities, while developing a digital repository to organize, publish, and share this output effectively.
Since its establishment, the Administration has initiated library automation, streamlining technical procedures, and adopting modern automated cataloging systems. In 1424 AH, it brought in an expert in automated cataloging to train library staff and transfer expertise to national talent. Beginning in 1430 AH, it expanded and developed several branch libraries in newly established and affiliated colleges to meet the information needs of the educational process. Today, having completed the automation of all technical operations and services, the Administration focuses its efforts on providing electronic resources, digitizing collections, and building the university’s digital repository for the intellectual output of the university and its staff.
