Taibah University in Madinah has registered a patent with the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property for an innovative medical tool designed to bend endodontic files—instruments used in root canal treatments—while allowing for precise control over the bending angle and the length of the section being bent.
The innovation was developed by Dr. Alaa Saud Al-Awfi, an Assistant Professor and Consultant in Endodontics. The device features a manual mechanism equipped with a graduated protractor base, a rotating bending arm, and a dedicated bending surface. This enables dentists to precisely set the bending angle—ranging from 0 to 90 degrees—and determine the length of the bent section using an integrated millimeter scale.
The tool was developed to address challenges associated with the manual bending of endodontic files, a process that often lacks precision regarding angles and lengths and poses a risk of the dentist’s hand coming into contact with the sharp file during shaping.
The device offers superior stability and control, eliminating the need for direct manual bending of the file during shaping. This contributes to greater precision when preparing files for root canal procedures.
This patent registration reflects Taibah University’s ongoing efforts to support research and innovation, transform scientific concepts into practical solutions, and encourage researchers to develop innovations that serve the healthcare sector. These efforts align with the Kingdom’s research, development, and innovation ecosystem and the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
