The Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Industries is considered one of the most important departments in the College of Pharmacy, as the department contributes to achieving the vision, mission and goals of the College of Pharmacy at Taibah University and offers courses covering all levels of study for the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program and the Doctor of Pharmacy program, which include pharmaceutics courses and pharmaceutical technology courses in addition to pharmaceutical microbiology courses.
Pharmaceutics courses specialize in the theoretical and practical study of the physicochemical properties of the materials that enter into the composition of various pharmaceutical preparations and the effect of these materials on the effectiveness of the resulting preparations. It also specializes in studying the methods of compounding various pharmaceutical preparations such as solid preparations such as tablets, capsules and suppositories, soft preparations such as ointments and creams, liquid preparations such as solutions and suspensions, and sterile preparations such as injection solutions and eye drops, at the laboratory level in pharmacies and hospitals and at the manufacturing level.
The department also teaches pharmaceutical technology courses, which specialize in studying pharmaceutical manufacturing techniques, processes and various devices used in them. It also specializes in studying the various tests that pharmaceutical preparations undergo to ensure their compliance with the specifications contained in the pharmacopoeias, as well as studying the principles of good industrial practice for the pharmaceutical industry. The Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Industries also supervises two training courses for students of the College of Pharmacy: the Community Pharmacy Training Course, which qualifies graduates to work in community pharmacies, and the Pharmaceutical Industry Training Course, which allows students of the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences program to observe the actual stages of drug manufacturing and quality testing in order to equip graduates with the necessary skills to keep pace with the National Transformation Program 2020, which is one of the most prominent pillars of Vision 2030, which aims to raise the percentage of drug manufacturing in the Saudi market from 20% to 40%.
The department also teaches pharmaceutical microbiology courses, which specialize in the theoretical and practical study of the characteristics of pathogenic microorganisms, methods of detecting and treating them, and laboratory tests conducted to diagnose the diseases they cause. It also specializes in studying sterilization methods, principles of public health, and principles of immunology.
The Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Industries also carries out many research activities, as faculty members supervise many research projects supported by the Center for Toxicology Research and Studies through the Pharmaceutical Preparations Research Group and the Nano Toxicology Research Group, which aim to serve the college's vision of achieving research leadership locally and regionally.
As for community service, faculty members provide scientific and technical consultations and services to governmental and non-governmental bodies interested in health and the pharmaceutical industry throughout the academic year. Department members also participate in supporting student club activities provided to the community of Madinah and its visitors to raise awareness and educate them on everything related to the optimal use of various pharmaceutical preparations and the best ways to store them
