This capstone design project course integrates knowledge, skills, and experience gained from engineering science components of the Chemical Engineering Program to solve open-ended chemical process design problems. The course intends to give students experience in finding a satisfactory solution for an open-ended problem of the student’s choosing, which has more than one solution. The design project is carried out in engineering teams of the students’ choosing. A project involving each team gives valuable experience in planning, division of work, and maintaining individual accountability within a framework of group success. This design project covers the following steps: 1) the design process which includes the steps in product and process design, environmental protection and safety and engineering ethics. 2) The process creation which includes preliminary database creation, experiments, preliminary process synthesis and development of the base-case design (flow diagrams, process simulation and Heuristics for process synthesis). 3) The detailed process synthesis which includes reactor design and reactor network synthesis, synthesis of separation trains, reactor-separator-recycle networks, heat and power integration, mass integration and optimal design.
