This course is designed to provide the dental students with the knowledge of complexity of aging, geriatric patient management and the importance of geriatric dentistry in total patient care. Moreover, students will be oriented about the special needs of elderly persons related to dental care: physiology and psychology of aging, systemic and oral health issues affecting older adults, medications used by elders and their potential adverse effects on oral health. Students will be oriented to recognizing impact of systemic health, medications, psychosocial, socioeconomic barriers, on frail elders in long-term care settings, and conducting appropriate treatment planning.
