This course is designed to prepare the dental students with the required skills to perform independently and safely the technical operative procedures needed for the following clinical courses. This will be achieved through a series of required pre-clinical tasks that goes in line with the needed theoretical knowledge. The course includes theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical part includes, identification of hand and rotary instruments, significance of dental anatomy, nomenclature of tooth defects and preparations. Also, the relation between the basic biological and mechanical principles and stages of tooth preparations to prepare class I & II for dental amalgam restoration and class II, III, IV & V for resin composite restoration. Moreover, it includes the study of restorative procedures required to achieve a successful functional restoration. The practical part includes all the technical procedures required to perform different designs for class I & II for dental amalgam restoration and class II, III, IV & V for resin composite restoration using hand and rotary instruments after the application of rubber dam.
