This course explores the development and evolution of the novel as a literary form in England from the 17th century to the early 19th century. It will examine the historical, social, and cultural contexts that contributed to the rise of the novel, as well as the major themes, narrative techniques, and innovations that have shaped the English novel tradition. Students will read and analyze a selection of seminal works that exemplify the diversity and richness of the novel form during its formative years. They will gain insights into the ways in which novels addressed issues of class, gender, morality, and individualism, among other topics.
