This course contains three parts. The first part is established to provide the students a knowledge about using the polarizing microscope and to learn them how to study the optical properties of minerals in ordinary light, under polarized light, between crossed Nicole and in convergent light. The second part gives the students a knowledge of crystal chemistry, the construction of the internal atomic structure of minerals and the structural classification of minerals. The third part enable students to acquire a range of important transferable skills giving the students the ability to define and identify the rock forming minerals based on their optical properties.
