Paleontology and stratigraphy are crucial fields that delve into the history of life on Earth and the study of geological time. This course divides into two parts, the first part "paleontology" that includes fundamental principles and concepts in paleontology, taphonomy and the processes of fossilization (preservation modes), full description of different fossil groups and types, paleontological techniques (field methods, collecting and analyzing fossils, Interpretation of paleontological data and its integration with geological information). The second part of the course "stratigraphy" will contains bases of classification of sedimentary rocks based on different factors (e.g., lithology, fossil content, age, sea-level changes, environmental changes, etc.) that resulted in the different branches of stratigraphy (litho-, bio-, chrono-, sequence, cyclo-, magneto-, event-, and seismic stratigraphy). This course displays different aspects of stratigraphy and intends to provide an introduction to the principles of stratigraphic analysis using techniques, such as lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy and sequence stratigraphic correlation.
