This course introduces students to the use of smart materials and actuators in the design of advanced prosthetics and orthotics. Smart materials, such as shape-memory alloys, piezoelectric materials, and electroactive polymers, respond to external stimuli like heat, pressure, or electricity, and are being increasingly integrated into modern assistive devices. The course covers the fundamentals of these materials, how they work, and their potential applications in enhancing the functionality of P&O devices.
