The course provides a framework for the geologic description of sedimentary basins, within the context of petroleum systems, with the application to exploration for reservoirs. It includes classification of sedimentary basins, their plate tectonic settings, mechanism of subsidence and thermal history. In addition to geological and geophysical methods of basin mapping; depositional systems, basin fill and facies models, thermal maturity of source rocks, generation and migration of hydrocarbons, and petroleum resource assessment.
