This course provides knowledge about construction materials, their properties, manufacturing processes and key issues associated with their applications in engineering. It covers four major topics including: fundamental concepts, microstructure development & phase equilibria, material properties and fabrication methods and applications. The course includes atomic structure, atomic bonding, crystal structures, defects, diffusion in materials and susceptibility to corrosion and fatigue. It also covers phase transformations and phase equilibria and how they impact microstructure development. The electrical, magnetic, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties of materials will also be reviewed. The course will also highlight modern fabrication technologies and applications of metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers. In the construction materials component, the engineering applications of structural and light-gauge steel, concrete, masonry, timber, glass, fiberglass, and composites are covered.
