This course will provide the student with the basics to the study of marine biology. The course will survey the chemical and physical properties of oceans and their habitats. In this course, the student will learn about life in the ocean depths, in coral reefs, estuaries, and in the open sea. Students will learn about marine microbes, plants (large and small), marine birds, reptiles, invertebrates, and marine vertebrates (fishes, reptiles, birds, and mammals). Students will learn how all these organisms connect with each other in the marine biome, and what threats are facing these ecosystems. Through lectures, field trips, and laboratory investigations students will learn about diverse marine ecosystems, impacts of humans on marine ecosystems, as well as the role of the oceans in determining our global climate. The course increases awareness of the ocean as an extremely significant natural resource and stresses conservation.
