The main goal of Cardio-Respiratory Fitness course is to integrate the student understanding of the respiratory, cardiovascular and hematological systems, addressing key structural, functional and dysfunctional phenomena pertaining to these three systems and how they relate; as well as the possible interactions with surrounding environment, family and society. During the course, students will study the cellular and molecular processes, and system control mechanisms that underlie respiration, gas exchange, circulation, haematopoiesis and homeostasis. In addition, they will explore the path physiology of major problems affecting these processes. This course is arranged in 9 PBL cases (a case per week, with 1-2 weeks study breaks every 3 cases). Cases are designed in an integrated way around specific case intended learning outcomes (ILOs) which details the learning required around the case topic. The cases contextualize learning to prepare students for the way that doctors meet patient problems. Each case provides the specific context of learning for the week ILOs through which the students should work in the PBL sessions to explore the key concepts they need to cover. These key biomedical, behavioral, social, ethical, legal and professional issues coupled to the theme of the week. The approach to learning around cases will develop students’ skills in collaborative group working and in independent learning. Concomitant to PBL tutorials, lectures and practical sessions will be provided to cover some key learning topics. Additionally, early clinical experience sessions, in which consultation skills (including communication skills, history taking and physical examination) are practiced in small groups will run each week.
