The course introduces the fundamental concepts of utilization of the Earth's internal heat to generate electricity or heating and cooling systems. It covers the fundamental principles which are essential for understanding the basic concepts and the physics of geothermal energy from sub-surface to surface energy conversion technologies. The framework of the course addresses the application and options of ground source heat, as well as the subsurface heat extraction from deep aquifer stratum and covers the parameters affecting the design of geothermal heat sources. The course provides the students with challenges, advantages and disadvantages of geothermal energy compared to other renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Students will learn about the environmental impact of geothermal energy and how to analyze and develop the economics of geothermal projects. By the end of the course, students should have a strong foundation in the physics of geothermal energy, be able to apply this knowledge to real-world problems and situations and be well-prepared for careers in the energy industry, research, and related fields.
