This course provides in depth learning of sedimentology concepts and sedimentological techniques through lectures, practical and fieldwork. The course focusses on the sedimentary processes and link them to their sedimentary products. The course begins by discussing the erosion and weathering processes and indicates their role in the creating different types of sedimentary particles. It focusses on the physics of sediments transportation and deposition mechanisms. Sedimentology course is designed to develop a broad, integrated understanding of the scope of clastic, chemical, carbonate and biological sediments and display them in the wider context of sedimentary basins. The course focusses on the sedimentary facies analyses procedures and its use to decipher the prevailing sedimentary environments with special emphasis on the characteristics of the different continental, transitional and marine sedimentary environments. The course is intended to furnish the students with adequate knowledge and sufficient skills to make careful and comprehensive sedimentological observations, and from these interpret and understand modern and ancient sedimentary environments.
