This course discusses the theories and approaches of both first and second language acquisition. The course also discusses the different successive stages that children and adults go through in the process of acquisition. It also sheds light on similarities and differences between first language acquisition and second language acquisition in terms of how linguistic knowledge develops, the factors which stimulate this development, and the end state of both acquisition processes. The course also introduces students to the learner characteristics and how they correlate with success in second language learning. It also sheds light on learning conditions for second language learning. It also provides discussions on the acquisition of different linguistic properties and accounts advanced by researchers on different acquisition phenomena.
