Mission

To enrich the  Pharmacy programs through advanced teaching of drug mechanisms and toxicology assessment, and by conducting high-quality, innovative research to support new drug discovery and serve the healthcare sector and the community.

About the Department:

The department teaches pharmacology and toxicology, which is concerned with the effect of drugs on the functions of the human body organs used in the treatment of various diseases, as well as the harmful effects resulting from the misuse of these drugs and other toxic substances, by offering thirteen courses in pharmacology and toxicology, including pharmacology-1, pharmacology-2, pharmacology-3, pharmacology-4 and toxicology. The department also teaches the requirements of these courses from biochemistry (molecular biology and pharmaceutical biochemistry-1, -2), physiology, and human anatomy, in addition to four elective courses, including drug side effects and adverse reactions, advanced molecular biology, drug bioscreening and environmental toxicology, for male and female students of the Bachelor of Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy programs. The department also teaches pharmacology courses to male and female students of the university’s various health colleges, such as the College of Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Rehabilitation Sciences, Nursing and Applied Medical Sciences. The department also participates in many scientific research projects submitted by the Deanship of Scientific Research at the university and King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology under the direct supervision of faculty members. The department also participates in activities University Toxicology Research and Studies Center.

Advantages of Department:

The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology distinguishes itself as a dynamic center for knowledge and application within the College of Pharmacy. It provides students and faculty with an integrated environment defined by the following strengths:

1. Depth in the Pharm.D. Scientific Foundation: The Department serves as the primary source of knowledge, enabling Pharm.D. students to understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms of diseases and the effects of drugs. This mastery is crucial for distinguishing their clinical skills.

2. Specialization in Drug Safety (Toxicology): The Department maintains a unique focus on toxicology and medication safety, qualifying graduates to take a leading role in areas such as Pharmacovigilance and Drug and Poison Information Centers.

3. Active and Innovative Research Environment: The Department comprises distinguished faculty members specialized in cutting-edge research fields, including Pharmacogenomics and drug discovery. This offers students excellent opportunities to participate in high-quality, impactful research.

4. Advanced Training Laboratories: The Department features labs equipped with the latest technologies, allowing for advanced practical experiments on biological models (such as lab rats) and biochemical applications. This strongly reinforces the pragmatic understanding of theoretical concepts.

5. Focus on Linking Theory to Clinical Application: The Department ensures that the fundamental courses taught directly serve the program's clinical track, making the learning process immediately relevant to pharmacy practice in the hospital setting.
