Preparatory Year for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

To prepare deaf and hard of hearing students linguistically and academically, enabling them to master university education skills and integrate flexibly and positively, maximizing their capabilities and potential to the fullest extent possible.

Program Pillars

The Preparatory Year Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing program comes in fulfillment of the University’s first strategic orientation—excellence in teaching and learning—and as one of the outcomes of the University’s academic program transformation. It aims to enable the integration of persons with disabilities across all fields—particularly the academic and educational domains—after graduating from secondary school, and to contribute to achieving an indicator of the Human Capability Development Program that seeks to improve equal access to education by raising the percentage of students with disabilities enrolled in educational institutions to 20% by 2025.

Taibah University has ensured, through its plans and programs, the provision and guarantee of quality, equitable, and inclusive education for all, inspired by the Kingdom’s far-sighted Vision 2030, which affirms: We will enable our sons and daughters with disabilities to obtain suitable employment and an education that ensures their independence and integration as active members of society, and we will provide them with all tools and facilities that support their success.

The Preparatory Year Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students serves this group at the national level and responds to the needs and aspirations of deaf and hard of hearing learners. The vision has become a tangible reality with University Council Resolution No. (4) in its sixth meeting for the year 1443 AH approving the program, followed by His Excellency the University President’s Decision No. 231/Q dated 5-4-1444 AH establishing the program’s supervisory and executive committee.

Program Goals

  1. Prepare deaf and hard of hearing students (linguistically and academically) to enable them to continue their university studies.
  2. Improve the level of language and academic skills (reading, writing, and sign language).
  3. Facilitate the transition from general education to readiness for university-level education.
  4. Empower deaf and hard of hearing students with university life skills.
  5. Anticipate future priorities for the successful enrollment of deaf and hard of hearing students in university education and the labor market.
